Every year on World Lung Cancer Day, I’m reminded that this disease is no longer confined to smokers alone. Shockingly, groundbreaking research shows that microscopic air pollution particles (PM2.5) and genetic mutations like EGFR are combining forces to spark lung cancer even in those who’ve never touched a cigarette. I find it alarming that these invisible particles penetrate deep into our lungs, awakening dormant cells already harboring cancer-causing changes. As I read these studies, I see more women and young people like you and me being diagnosed, and it breaks my heart. What surprises me most is how everyday exposures inside our homes contribute to this silent destroyer. Burning incense sticks during prayers, inhaling kitchen smoke while cooking, and even radon gas leaking from the ground can all elevate the risk. In Asia, nearly half of all lung cancer patients have never smoked, and this trend is growing. Every time I light incense or burn wood in my stove, I think twice about the health price we pay for comfort and tradition. That’s why I urge you not to ignore a persistent cough, unexplained breathlessness, or chest discomfort. These could be early warning signs that your lungs are crying out for help. On this World Lung Cancer Day 2025, let’s change our thinking: lung cancer isn’t just linked to cigarettes it’s also in the very air we breathe. Let’s advocate for cleaner air, better ventilation, and regular medical checkups. Together, we can shed light on these hidden threats and protect ourselves and our loved ones from this devastating disease.
