Recordings for HACK started in 1991 after an avalanche on Ohau skifield killed our friend Dan Crone. We had written the Ilmenite song together and I recorded it first. Profits from the Wasteland CD were channelled back into studio time. So this album took a long time, much too long, to make.
My children were young and it was a great family time, we were able to stay up on Cardrona skifield and at the Ohau Lodge each winter, and travel throughout the South Island in the summers. We went to Japan one year, where I was in house performer at MOMA (the museum of music and art) in Osaka.
I suppose I developed a protest mentality from my father, and would try to sew up an issue with a song, HACK has these songs, Peanuts for Monkeys, The Privilege of Living with the Poor, Beautiful Country/Lost Paradise, and others like this. Although I chose to be more positive later, many of these issues are still the same.
We just happened to be around Lake Ohau, Twizel, and Wanaka a lot during these years and much of the songwriting happened there, a few of the songs are from my earlier cassette. Towards the end of recording I added Higher Trails, by John Hanlon, which I’d always got a thrill palying on the snow fields as a High Altitude Country Kid.
When the CDs arrived, my name was spelt CHBIS, after some far away over diligent factory person decided I’d spelt it wrong, so it was only when the second bunch of CDs arrived with my name spelt correctly that we began selling it.
It was 1995, music had changed and techno had arrived. I was disappointed with the lack of interest that generation x had in original kiwi music and they were tough years for gigging musicians. I’m very pleased I had the chance to make a piece of musical art like HACK.
