So, it might be new, but also, it’s not. The Phaze 5 from storm is identical to the previously released and now partially banned Phaze 4, with a few updates. First, the colors are different, which you would hope doesn’t impact the hardness of the cover, and the second, is the finish. The original was released at the notorious 1500 grit polished and this is the first featuring the all new reacta-gloss finish on the R2S Pearl cover with no grit specifically noted by Storm.

The 4.5 x 4.5 x 2.5 2LS layout is one meant to encourage an earlier roll while not locking the ball into being one thing all the time. I personally have struggled with matching up with all of the phazes as they haven’t quite hit the roll phase right for me, and this is meant to help offset that tendency.

On the lanes, the Phaze 5 did almost everything I expected it too. I had a decent look across most of the lane as long as I leaned more rev dominant, but overall, it got to the pocket basically every time. Something interesting about the performance was that the more I focused on throwing the ball up the boards rather than playing more angle through the fronts, the better downlane performance I saw.

You’ll see a couple shots that labor due to early friction and some carry down, which with something like a night road, I would combat with more angle to get it into dry boards sooner. The Phaze 5 did not like that approach at all. Keeping my angles in front of me not only got the ball to the pocket more, but also much more effectively, regardless of where my feet were and what I was doing with my hand position at the bottom of my swing.

But while this is not what I would normally do, that just means that the pairings with another piece would be a little different. Putting this piece in your bag with a phaze 2 or a gem is gonna give you a set of options for your league night to carry and score well.

So with that, here’s my recommendations on types of bowlers that I think would match up well with this piece. The first is bowlers that have a lot of natural axis rotation in their release. If you get around the side of the ball, the phaze 5 does a great job of getting down the lane and translating that into an effective path through the pins on a variety of conditions. The second is definitely speed dominant bowlers. The phaze 5 will allow those who tend to have to play straighter up the boards to stay in their comfort zone and get the ball down lane once friction develops and will still get through the pins well and get the corners out.

In short, the Phaze 5 is just the next step of performance using the proven velocity core from Storm, and bowlers of all varieties are sure to appreciate its consistency, predictability and performance on the lanes.
