Some of you may know that I often have a hard time naming my pieces. I’m not usually very visual when I write—rather than imagining a specific scene, my writing tends to be driven by channeling a particular emotion I’m experiencing at the time. It allows me to express myself in a way that words often fail to do, and it’s very cathartic for me.
Because of that, it can be difficult for me to describe what a piece is actually “about”, and that often makes finding the right title or visuals just as challenging.

With ‘Hope’, this was no exception. It’s a piece I started writing quite some time ago, and one that took a long while to fully come into its own.
The recording session took place this April in my old family home in Denmark, where I still keep my beloved Andreas Christensen pianette. I was back for about a month, reconnecting with family and friends and enjoying the beautiful unfolding of spring—and it became the perfect setting for finalising and recording ‘Hope’.

The main theme always felt simple and soothing to me. It came from a need to feel held, and to not feel alone in times of struggle. The contrasting theme is a rare case where I actually had a visual image in my mind while writing—it always felt like the sun breaking through the clouds, like taking a deep breath and opening up.

When I played the final recording to my dad, one of the first words that came to mind for him was “håb,” which is Danish for “hope”. When he said it, it clicked instantly and I knew that had to be the title. I think if I had played the piece for him years ago, he might not have said that. Maybe it took the current state of the world as a framework for listening to bring him to that interpretation.

In the end, I chose the English ‘Hope’ as the title, because I wanted it to reflect what we’re all going through collectively right now—and to perhaps offer someone a sense of comfort and connection, no matter where they are.
