THE BIBLE SAYS NOT TO ASSOCIATE WITH “BELIEVERS” IN UNREPENTANT SIN
Did you know that Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 5:9-13 not to associate with “Christian believers” who indulge in sexual sin (porn, lust, masturbation, fornication), are greedy (selfish), worship idols (putting anything before the Lord like money, power, sex, alcohol, drugs, smoking, gambling, sports, food, etc), are abusive (emotionally, verbally, physically or sexually), drink excessive alcohol, or cheats people and are regularly sinning. Sadly that describes a whole lot of people who attend church today. There are many “believers” who are living ungodly lives full of unrepentant sin with only fleshly fruit and have no desires to change and get right with the Lord and obey the Bible. Paul actually says we are to have nothing to do with them. Not even to eat with them and that we are to judge those inside the church who are living sinful lives and that we should remove the evil person from among us.
1 Corinthians 5:9-13 NLT
“When I wrote to you before, I told you not to associate with people who indulge in sexual sin. But I wasn’t talking about unbelievers who indulge in sexual sin, or are greedy, or cheat people, or worship idols. You would have to leave this world to avoid people like that. I meant that you are not to associate with anyone who claims to be a believer yet indulges in sexual sin, or is greedy, or worships idols, or is abusive, or is a drunkard, or cheats people. Don’t even eat with such people. It isn’t my responsibility to judge outsiders, but it certainly is your responsibility to judge those inside the church who are sinning. God will judge those on the outside; but as the Scriptures say, “You must remove the evil person from among you.””
So what if a person says they are a believer and attends church regularly but behaves evil with fleshly fruit and you are married to them? What if they emotionally hurt you every week? What if they mock you and put you down every week and are critical and mean? What if they try to stop you from what God wants you to do? What if they want you to obey them instead of what God wants you to do? What if they cause you to tolerate their sin or worse cause you to sin like Ananias did to his wife Sapphira by making her lie about how much money they kept from selling their property in Acts 5:1-11 causing her to die? What if they are looking at porn or fornicating with others they are not married to and are selfish, controlling and prideful?
2 Corinthian 6:14-18 ESV
Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with sin? Or what fellowship has light with darkness? What accord has Christ with Belial? Or what portion does a believer share with an unbeliever? What agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God; as God said, “I will make my dwelling among them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Therefore go out from their midst, and be separate from them, says the Lord, and touch no unclean thing; then I will welcome you, and I will be a father to you, and you shall be sons and daughters to me, says the Lord Almighty.”
So we need to be very careful who we associate with in our lives and if the person is not treating you with love and respect, kindness or gentleness with no godly behavior and is living a life full of sin, selfishness, sexual impurity and ungodly behavior or abuse and tells people they are a Christian but have fleshly fruit and is evil then we need to stand up to their evil ways and call them out for it. There are many who believe in God but few who obey.
We need to confront them and make them aware they need to get their soul wounds healed and deliverance from demons so they can have the fruit of Christ and be a real believer with sin being rare. If they humble themselves and pursue deliverance then great. But if they refuse to repent, get right with the Lord and behave like a real Christian and continue to want to emotionally tear you down then the Bible is clear that we are to have nothing to do with them. They are not a real believer. They have no fruit of the spirit in them. They are tools for demons to use to hurt you and stop you from God’s assignment for you.
