In Jewish Resistance: Weapons, Written Words, and Religious Defiance: Posen Library Teaching Clip #11, Samuel Kassow demonstrates that resistance to antisemitism and to annihilation was not limited to armed rebellion and partisan activities. Written words and religious defiance are also methods of fighting. This teaching clip highlights three forms of resistance: armed confrontation (through the example of partisan leader Abba Kovner), defiance through written documentation (in the underground prison-cell diary of Gusta Dawidsohn-Draenger, “Justyna”), and religious faith (in the Warsaw ghetto sermons of Rabbi Kalonymus Kalman Shapira).

Samuel Kassow, Charles Northam Professor of History at Trinity College, is the author of many studies on Russian and Jewish history including Who Will Write Our History: Emanuel Ringelblum, the Warsaw Ghetto and the Oyneg Shabes Archive (Indiana University Press, 2007), which has been translated into eight languages. It received the Orbis Prize of the AAASS and was a finalist for a National Jewish Book Award. Who Will Write Our History was adapted into a documentary of the same title in 2018. Kassow is coeditor of The Posen Library of Jewish Culture and Civilization, Volume 9: Catastrophe and Rebirth, 1939–1973.
