A mysterious visitor has just made its way into our solar system — but it's no ordinary object. Something fast, icy, and completely unfamiliar has been spotted slipping past our cosmic neighborhood. No one saw it coming until it was already here.
It all began on July 1st, 2025, when an automated telescope in Chile—part of a NASA sky survey project—picked up the first signs of this unusual comet. Twenty days later, on July 21st, the Hubble Space Telescope locked its gaze onto it and captured a sharp, revealing image.
The image captured by Hubble shows a soft, glowing haze surrounding the comet—a signature that it’s beginning to warm up as it gets closer to the Sun. This warm-up causes frozen material on the comet’s surface to turn directly into gas, dragging dust along with it and forming what astronomers call a coma. While a few bright streaks appear in the photo due to energetic particles hitting the camera, the comet remains perfectly visible.
This hazy glow confirms that 3I Atlas is active, which isn’t surprising for a comet. What is surprising is its origin. This one didn’t come from anywhere near the Sun. It’s actually from outside our solar system—an interstellar traveler.
Look closely at the image and you’ll notice the comet seems stretched along its path. That’s not a long tail—it’s a blur caused by its high velocity. The comet is racing through space at nearly 60 kilometers per second, and during the 100-second photo exposure, it moved just enough to smear slightly in the frame.
To dig deeper, astronomers turned to spectroscopy—a method that analyzes the light coming through the gas and dust surrounding a space object. Normally, this technique reveals common gases like water vapor or carbon dioxide venting from a comet. But with 3I Atlas, there were no obvious traces of these. Instead, most of the light reflected off the surface or the dust, leaving researchers puzzled.
