Tesla changed the car industry forever. Just like Henry Ford is responsible for mass producing automobiles, Tesla influenced the way car manufacturers look at electric vehicles forever.

There is something about our Tesla Model Y that draws random people to come to us and ask questions. Does it really drive itself? Is it fast? Is it reliable? Do you charge it at home? What happens if you run out of battery in the middle of the road? I even have negative comments like: "you are not really saving the planet as producing the battery for your Tesla pollutes the environment" and "the electricity to charge your car comes from dirty sources" and guess what? It is TRUE! producing the battery for an electric car affects the environment. For electric cars to be more environmentally friendly, the country must promote more renewable energies like they have in countries like Norway. But then again, all of the energy needed to move an internal combustion engine car is bad for the planet.
And let's not even talk about the disposal of the battery when the car comes to the end of its usable life.
So, Are Electric Cars Really Eco-Friendly And Zero Emissions?
No, electric cars are not zero emissions vehicles. We have seen that although they do not emit CO2 while being driven, they might do it in 3 other stages: during manufacturing, energy production and at the end of their life cycle.
If anything, Hydrogen cars could be a little cleaner than electric battery cars because they use smaller batteries but the process to obtain the liquid hydrogen is also pollutant in its current form not to mention the lacking infrastructure of charging stations which makes hydrogen cars pretty inconvenient for most people.
The reason I believe Tesla did change the car world forever is because we are starting to see all manufacturers get serious about producing desirable electric cars that people actually want to drive. The fuel crisis of the 1970's taught Americans that we can actually drive compact cars. So into the 80's we saw brands like Toyota boom in sales in the United States of small, reliable fuel efficient cars. Ironically, Toyota now sells us cars that are gigantic and gas guzzlers as well.
Later we saw Hybrid vehicles gain popularity. The Honda Insight of the early 2000's was the first mass-produced hybrid sold in the US followed by the Toyota Prius a few months later.

In the last decade particularly, car manufacturers have implemented hybrid technology to many of their products which at first only had the purpose of efficiency and normally was exclusive to smaller vehicles but now, Hybrid technologies are applied to cars in search of not only efficiency but also performance. The EPA also mandates that car manufacturers maintain a combined fuel economy of 35.5 miles per gallon.
Tesla sold the first electric vehicle in the United States as we know them today back in 2008, reactions were "Senior leaders at several large automakers, including Nissan and General Motors, have stated that the Roadster was a catalyst which demonstrated that there is pent-up consumer demand for more efficient vehicles.
I think that Tesla demonstrated that people are willing to drive electric cars as long as they are desirable, aspirational and most of all, relatively practical.
In 2012, Tesla introduced the Model S to the market. Tesla has increased the range of their vehicles and has expanded its portafolio first with the Model X, But what really made Tesla gain momentum was the introduction of the Model 3, then the Model Y appeared which along with the Model 3 have multiplied Tesla sales tremendously.

To this day, Tesla continues to be a very small contender in the auto industry but it is the biggest name in electrified vehicles. For comparison, in the US, GM sold about 10 times as many vehicles than Tesla in 2020 but globally sales of electric vehicles rose 43 percent in 2020 with Tesla selling the most vehicles at half a million units.


Worldwide, Tesla holds 22.7 percent of the market share. And here is an interesting statistic: on a recent list published by Car and Driver, Tesla holds 4 places in the top 10 Electric Vehicle Sales and VW group holds 3.

Tesla continues to be the top choice when it comes to electric cars because of their charging network.

Will I ever buy another Internal Combustion Engine Car? I don't know, as electric vehicles have proved to be the better technology.
