Prime Hook is one of the largest coastal marsh restoration projects on the Atlantic Coast. Supported by federal funding for Hurricane Sandy recovery, the project restores 4,000 acres of coastal marsh and rebuilds one mile of existing dunes and barrier beach to improve the coastline’s natural defenses in the face of storms and sea-level rise.

Because of its location on the Delaware Bay, Prime Hook is a key stopover site for hundreds of thousands of migratory birds on their route along the Atlantic Flyway, including federally listed species such as rufa red knots. The Delaware Bay hosts the largest population of spawning horseshoe crabs, which helps sustain these migratory shorebirds when they stop here to feast on horseshoe crab eggs.

The restoration of habitat and natural tidal water circulation will enable salt marsh vegetation to return and flourish, improving the resilience of refuge wetlands against future storms and sea-level rise and providing valuable habitat for birds and other wildlife.
Restoration at Prime Hook also benefits local communities by reducing potential flooding and damage from future storms, providing recreation opportunities — such as fishing, hiking, wildlife watching and more — protecting roads and other infrastructure, and boosting the coastal tourism economy.
