Do birds eat poop? Yes! 💩

You may have noticed how the bird parents take some white packets from the nest after feeding their chicks. That's bird poop wrapped in a jelly bag to make it compact and easy to grab. Sometimes the adult birds simply trap it in their beaks and carry it away from the nest. Other times, however, the parent removes the poop from the chick's cloaca and swallows it straight away. Why?

Well, newly born chicks don't have a strong digestive tract and can't process many nutrients yet. By swallowing the excrement, the parent is recycling the hard-earned food and still getting energy from it 🪱

Some birds swallow their young's droppings throughout the breeding season, while others do so only in the beginning when the young are still small. As the birds grow, their digestion improves and the poop becomes less nutritious. So the parents gradually stop eating the fecal sacs and just carry them away from the nest to keep the little ones clean and to avoid predators discovering them by the white droppings.
