How to Pour & Trowel a Stained Concrete Overlay

This week we installed a troweled concrete overlay on a basement floor.

The floor had previously been acid stained, but it had dark lines running across the entire floor from where the contractor covered the floor right after it was poured. Since these lines are cured into the concrete, we are unable to ever completely remove them, so the only solution is to cover the floor.

This customer really liked the way their floor looked (other than the lines) so they decided they wanted us to install a troweled concrete overlay so that we could stain it to look like the original floor.

First we had to grind the concrete to remove as much sealer off of the floor as possible. Then we applied a polymer bonding agent to the floor that would help our overlay to properly bond to the concrete.

Once the concrete was resurfaced, we applied a brown/orange concrete stain. After the stain dried, we rolled on a coat of clear epoxy followed by a coat of clear urethane.
