We had some visitors from Australia last week, who had an unusual request from us...

They were craving the Chikoo fruit (sapota), which they said they don’t get in Australia, and they were hoping to eat it during their trip to India.

I’d never seen anyone rave about the Chikoo as much, so I thought let’s find out how the fruit is doing on international hype standards...

Turns out... India is the largest exporter of Chikoo in the world... with almost 12k shipments a year, and the countries that come second and third barely do 10 shipments in the entire year!

The largest importers are in Bahrain, Saudi and UAE...

Food experts believe that the fruit will do fabulously well in Europe because of its chocolaty, caramelly taste... and you also see that in recent data with exports growing in the UK and Canada as well.

But you see how all of us got exposed to exotic fruits like passion fruit, blueberries and blackberries - first as flavours in ice creams and jams... and only later as the fruit itself when supply chains were in place to offer it to the masses.

I think something similar is happening with the Chikoo...

I was ordering ice cream on a quick commerce app yesterday, when I noticed Chikoo ice cream on offer along with Jamun and even the Mulberry flavour (shehtoot).

Similarly, Chikoo powder is being exported as a natural sweetener, and something to make ice creams, shakes and other such value add products from.

A quick price comparison on Amazon across geographies, and Sapota Powder sells for Rs 1000 per kg in India, but over Rs 1 lakh per kilo in the US!!!

I understand the market is small at the moment, but totally the kind of fruit, which can be pitched to a health conscious consumer as a natural form of sugar.
