How Klopp’s Liverpool Have Inspired Farke’s Norwich City. Daniel Farke’s Championship winning side have already impressed Premier League fans in the first three games of the season - but what are the similarities with Jurgen Klopp’s Borussia Dortmund & Liverpool sides.

Even with the two losses against Liverpool & Frank Lampard’s Chelsea - the Championship champions have looked impressive in their overall play. The likes of Teemu Pukki being involved in six Premier League goals this season, scoring five goals & an assist - is a good sign of what Norwich can doin going forward.

Appointed in his role in May 2017, Daniel Farke became Norwich’s first foreign head coach in it’s 114 year history. The Canaries poached Farke from his position as manager of Borussia Dortmund’s Reserves and after finishing 14th in his first season, he stormed the Championship the following year - finishing the 2018/19 Championship with 94 points and top of the league. But it wasn’t just Farke who had a hand in gaining promotion for the Canaries, sporting Director Stuart Webber was equally key. At just 35, Webber has been involved in recruitment at a number of top clubs including Liverpool, Huddersfield and Wolves before joining Norwich a month earlier than Farke. The year’s following Webber’s appointment at his last three clubs have saw them all reach the Premier League, with Wolves moving all the way from League One. Webber himself has stated how closely he works with Farke to ensure they bring in the right players.

One of the main similarities to Klopp’s Liverpool - is having the full-backs almost as wing backs, very much what Trent Alexander-Arnold & Andy Robertson do for Jurgen Klopp’s side. Their general attacking build up is centred around a 2-3-5 - much like Liverpool with Norwich pushing full backs, Max Aarons and Jamal Lewis into advanced areas where they operate as nominal wingers - with the full backs holding the width it encourages the forwards, Buendia, Pukki and Cantwell to roam and drift inside, creating a narrow attacking shape. Last season in the Championship, full backs, Aarons and Lewis were directly involved in 13% of Norwich’s goals and I expect those numbers to grow in the Premier League.
