Backstory:

In 326 BCE, on the banks of the Hydaspes (modern-day Jhelum River), Alexander of Macedon faced an opponent unlike any he had seen before — King Porus, commanding a force that included towering Indian war elephants.

Greek historians record this as a “victory” for Alexander, claiming his army stopped advancing only because his soldiers refused to march further east. But Indian sources from that era are completely silent about Alexander. No ancient Indian text mentions him, the battle, or even a mighty King Porus. This silence is striking, especially considering Takshashila, one of the greatest universities of the ancient world, was right next to the supposed battlefield and home to scholars who recorded political and military events.

Some historians, including Russian Marshal Georgy Zhukov, have suggested a different story: that Alexander may have faced not a massive Indian empire, but a minor border chieftain, and that he may have actually lost the battle. The elephants, the difficult terrain, and fierce local resistance might have led to significant Macedonian losses. It is even possible Alexander was injured in the fight as his horse Bucephalus died here and he returned west weakened, eventually dying in Babylon.

The Greek version could well be an embellished tale to protect the legend of their greatest conqueror. After all, just a decade later, Indian sources record the arrival of Seleucus Nicator, Alexander’s successor, yet still there is no mention of Alexander himself.

Was the Battle of Hydaspes really a glorious Macedonian victory, or a forgotten Indian triumph that history books never told us about?
