Winter to Spring Timelapse on the Teno River in Lapland 4K

We are so happy to present you our May timelapse of the Teno River here in Utsjoki in the northernmost part of Finnish Lapland.

We took more than 12 thousand pictures between 1st and 30th May 2020 to capture the transition between winter and spring and to immortalise the departure of the ice from our mighty Teno River (Tana in Norwegian - the other side of the river is Norway). After a very long and harsh winter with record amounts of snow, the river ice finally broke in the last week of May, many days later than the average historical break-up day.

A few facts about our video:
each day runs over 12 seconds
a picture was taken every 5 minutes, and every 2.5 minutes during the ice break-up
we had many, many birds in the trees in front of the webcam. You can see them "flicker" through the timelapse. They were mainly Common and Arctic Redpolls
when the ice started melting, it released thousands of stoneflies that really enjoyed walking around our camera dome. These are the black moving insects you can see starting 17th May (03:23)
the first channel of continuous open water was visible starting 23rd May (04:36)
the ice is breaking/moving due to the increase of the river's water level due to the melting of the snow in the fells. At 05:09 you can see a sudden increase of water level and again at 05:20

The month of May is usually quiet between the busy northern lights winter and the fishing and midnight sun season, but we also get very excited to see when the river ice will break and open! In May, many migratory birds also join us in Lapland to start breeding and some of them were even displaying on the river ice!
