The Vatican has unveiled the theme and logo of the next International World Youth Day, which will be in Seoul, South Korea in 2027 and preparation is underway. South Korea has nearly 6 million Catholics, which represent 11% of the population. This makes the country the first non-Christian nation to ever host the large Catholic youth event. What is unique about the Catholic Church in Korea is that it was born and developed under the initiative of lay scholars and intellectuals, not missionaries. Over the centuries, Korean Christians suffered violent persecution. In 2014, 124 martyrs were beatified by Pope Francis during a five-day trip to South Korea.
