This 8K macro showcases a long, bonanza grade gold–telluride vein slice from a historic underground gold camp in the North Cascades of Washington State. Perched high above timberline in the Mount Baker mining district, this remote mountaintop workings area has long been known for narrow but exceptionally rich quartz veins. Early 1900s crews packed ore out by hand and pack train, chasing small ore shoots that carried bonanza grades of gold and rare tellurides. Modern underground work in the 21st century has reopened parts of the old workings and produced a new generation of specimen-grade ore, helping to cement this camp’s reputation among collectors for spectacular gold–telluride pieces from a rugged North Cascades setting.

Geologically, the ore comes from a steep quartz fissure vein cutting metamorphic rocks near a granitic intrusion in the western North Cascades. Brittle faulting created open fractures that were later flooded by hot, silica-rich hydrothermal fluids. As those fluids cooled and mixed with surrounding rocks, they deposited coarse quartz with bismuth–gold tellurides, iron sulfides, and native gold—a telluride-rich variant of orogenic gold mineralization that is unusual for the Pacific Northwest and of special interest to economic geologists.

This particular specimen is an impressive vein slab measuring about 18.3 × 5.0 × 0.9 cm and weighing 172 grams, collected underground in 2025. The piece is dominated by a dark, sulfide- and telluride-rich ore patch, grading into cream to orange-stained quartz with scattered metallic pockets and several crisp fracture seams. Under 8K macro, the contrast between milky quartz, smoky gray ore, and tiny flashes of gold makes this a superb “textbook” slice of high-grade North Cascades gold–telluride ore.
