On March 21st 2013 at Broward Government Center, a press conference was held opposing the Florida Legislature's attacks on local control.

Mayor Kristin Jacobs was joined by faith leaders, local workers and concerned citizens speaking out against proposed legislation that would prevent local governments from establishing protections for residents against Wage Theft and take away local control

Living Wage ordinances for public contracts are currently in place in Broward County and numerous other cities and counties across Florida, including Orlando, Gainesville, Miami, Miami Beach, Palm Beach County, and Miami-Dade County. The contracts with these cities and counties alone impact thousands of Florida workers who would take an immediate cut in pay and benefits, undermining local economies.

"Bills like this represent an ominous attempt to remove power from locally elected officials and make the voters mere bystanders in the democratic processes that define the character of their communities. That's why I'm joining other members of the community and urging a no vote on these harmful bills," said Kristin Jacobs.
