Much of Salisbury plain in Wiltshire is used by the army as a training ground. Approx half the area 150 square miles is given over for military exercises. It is a sparsely populated region.

There are many significant archaeological sites on the plain and even an abandoned village called "Imber" which is open on rare occasions to the public.
Salisbury plain is crisscrossed with many By ways which are also open at times to public access but can be closed when military exercises are under way.
