SandFest 2024, Ypao Beach, Guam

SandFest is an engaging, family-oriented event that highlights the stunning coastal environment of Guam while promoting environmental awareness and community involvement. Organized by the Guam Coastal Management Program in collaboration with the Office of the Governor and the Lt. Governor’s Island-wide Beautification Task Force, and funded by a grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), SandFest invites people of all ages to join in a full day of creativity and conservation.

At its heart, SandFest seeks to raise public awareness about pressing environmental issues like beach litter, shoreline erosion, and the significance of green infrastructure. Through beach cleanups, educational booths, and activities centered on environmental themes, participants learn practical methods to safeguard our island’s natural resources and enhance community resilience.

A centerpiece of SandFest is the coastal and marine-themed Sand Sculpting Competition, where individuals, teams, schools, corporate groups, and community organizations display their creativity and craftsmanship through elaborate sand sculptures. Professional sand sculptors from outside the island will also conduct live demonstrations and workshops, inspiring attendees to engage with nature and explore their artistic expression.

Additionally, SandFest acts as a platform for government agencies, NGOs, and community organizations to present their environmental programs and initiatives, encouraging collaboration and unified action towards a more sustainable future.

In essence, SandFest is more than just an event; it’s a movement that empowers individuals and communities to take charge of their environment, celebrate their cultural heritage, and foster positive change for future generations.
