1. What havoc has the super cyclone wreaked in the life of people of Orissa?
Ans. In October 1999, the super cyclone devastated everything in Orissa. All ninety six houses were destroyed. People lost their families. Old trees were uprooted and crashed to the earth. The super cyclone also killed dogs, goats and cattle.
2. How has Prashant a teenager, been able to help the people of his village?
Ans. After the devastation of super cyclone, teenager Prashant stepped in as a leader of his village. He organised a group of youths and elders to arrange food, clean the shelter of dirt and to treat to the wounds and fractures of all injured. He persuaded the women to start working in the food-for-work programme started by NGO and organised cricket matches for children. He resettled survivors in their own community.
3. How have the people of the community helped one another? What role do the women of Kalikuda play during these days?
Ans. The people of the community have worked in group to get food and other materials for the shelter. Women of Kalikuda have formed them into teams to look after the orphaned children. They also started working in the food-for-work programme started by NGO.
4. Why do Prashant and other volunteers resist the plan to set up institutions for orphans and widows? What alternatives do they consider?
Ans. Prashant and other volunteers resist the plan to set up institutions for orphans and widows, because they feel that in such institutions, children would grow up without love and widows would suffer from stigma and loneliness.
They consider the alternative of new foster families made up of childless widows and children without adult care, so that they may resort to one another.
5. Do you think Prashant is a good leader? Do you think young people can get together to help people during natural calamities?
Ans. Yes, Prashant is a good leader. He organised people and raised their morale. He provided them with ration. He organised a team of youth volunteers to clean the shelter. He tried to find out the best possible solution. Yes, young people can get together to help people during natural calamities.
