The Modified Gathered Bind Off is meant to be an alternative to a regular gathered bind off, which can create a bulky top, or a decreased crown method which in some yarns or looms may cause gaps. This method will create about two rows worth of knitting and be much flatter or totally flat versus other methods. However, if your pattern uses a purl stitch: if you are working a garter stitch, ribbed stitch, or seed stitch there are directions in the Set-up section below to adapt stitch for pattern.

Please read full instructions before you start the modified gathered bind off to be sure you completely understand.

I hope this new modified gathered bind off will prove helpful!

Modified Gathered Bind off

By Kristen Mangus

Instructions:

Use with any loom. If the loom has an odd number of pegs do not move over the stitch on the last peg.

Set-up:

When you're ready to finish the hat and bind off, move every other stitch over one peg. (Ex. move all even pegs to odd. Leave last loop alone if you are using an odd number of pegs).

Work the peg by lifting the bottom loop over-the-top loop to create a knit stitch. Or create a purl stitch by pulling the bottom loop through the top loop. (TIP: move stitches over while working last round before following steps below so the stitches are loose enough to move easily.)

ROUND 1:

Step 1:

Wrap working yarn around entire loom circumference one and a half times and cut yarn.

Step 2:

Using knitting tool, place yarn below the first peg with a loop, and pull all the way through as if to purl. Pull all working yarn through the loop and take loop off peg.

Step 3:

Passing the working yarn behind the pegs, skip the next peg holding a loop and move to the second peg with a loop. Repeat step 2.

Repeat Step 3 until 1 full round of knitting is off the loom (meaning you passed your staring point for that round/row.). It's important not to fully tighten or pull the slack just yet.

Note for odd # pegs: Treat last peg as "peg #1" on ROUND 2 (Begin pulling the yarn through from above with that peg, which on your loom might have ended up as one of 2 adjacent pegs with a loop remaining on each after Step 1).

ROUND 2:

Step 4:

Place yarn above first peg, with a loop, and pull all the way through as if to Reverse Purl (aka Knit). Pull all working yarn through the loop and take loop off peg.

Step 5:

Pass the working yarn behind the pegs and repeat Step 4 for the remaining loops on the loom. Continue until all stitches are off the loom.

Turn knitting inside out and gently start pulling on the working yarn to tighten the last two rounds of modified gathered bind off.

Tie a knot and weave in ends or cut.

Happy Crafting!!
