Foreign Affairs Minister is "fighting for her boss’s job” and not Trump against tariffs: Poilievre

During question period in the Canadian House of Commons on Wednesday, Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre took aim at Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, joking his Foreign Affairs Minister, Mélanie Joly, is “fighting” for his job, rather than handling recent threats against Canada made by president-elect Donald Trump.

“On the front page of the New York Times, you'd think the foreign [affairs] minister would be fighting Trump's tariffs,” Poilievre said. “Instead, she's fighting for her boss's job, where she's described in the headline as a possible successor,” he added.

Last month, Trump proposed a 25-per cent tariff on all items coming into the U.S. from Canada or Mexico — if they don’t take control of their drug and border issues — upon his reclamation of the Oval Office in January.

The New York Times profile on Joly described her as a “top contender” to lead Canada’s Liberal party. Despite Poilievre’s comments, Joly has not addressed these comments.
