Dr. Lokesh Beerakayala from Medicover Hospital explains that vitiligo, an autoimmune disorder caused by the damage or destruction of melanin-producing melanocyte cells due to genetic factors, skin injuries, or vitamin deficiencies, leads to white patches on the skin, and though primarily a cosmetic issue not requiring mandatory treatment, therapies like repigmentation, depigmentation, phototherapy, and mini grafting can restore uniform skin tone, with prevention possible through a balanced diet and ultraviolet light therapy, noting that five out of every hundred people in India face psychological distress due to this condition, which can be significantly managed with modern treatments, emphasizing the importance of mental resilience and awareness of available treatment options.
