Peer review is considered the backbone of scholarly publishing. However, various challenges have led to a so-called “crisis of peer review.” With not enough willing reviewers to go around (“reviewer fatigue”) and concerns about the quality of peer review, combined with increasing research integrity issues affecting peer review and other aspects of publishing, our community is working toward understanding the current state of peer review and developing innovative solutions to these challenges. This panel will explore the current state of peer review through data about reviewer activity and the connection between peer review and retractions. It will also showcase approaches to making peer review open and transparent. This multi-faceted topic requires input from all corners of scholarly communication; therefore, this panel will include perspectives of an academic librarian, publisher, and research analytics provider.
