Le Ly Hayslip was born in Ky La village in Hoa Quy, now a district of Da Nang in central Vietnam. Her earliest years were spent under French colonial rule during the First Indochina War. At twelve years old, American forces arrived in her village and she was later arrested and tortured by the South Vietnamese government for "revolutionary sympathies".

After being released from prison, Hayslip fled to Saigon with her mother and gained employment as housekeepers for a wealthy Vietnamese family. But, at sixteen, Hayslip became pregnant and lost her job. Destitute, she fled to Da Nang and began working in the black market to feed her mother and young son.

In 1969, she met and married an American contractor and immigrated to San Diego, California in 1970. After creating a successful life in America, she returned to Vietnam in 1986 to reunite with her family; a journey that inspired her to begin mending the cultural wounds inflicted by the Vietnam War. In 1989, she published her first book, When Heaven and Earth Changed Places, which was later adapted into a movie, Heaven & Earth, (1993), by Oliver Stone.

Hayslip eventually founded two charitable organizations - East Meets West Foundation and Global Village Foundation - and is renowned for her humanitarian work in Vietnam.
