Gill nets are one of the most indiscriminate and deadly types of fishing gear in the world. Designed to trap fish by their gills, these nearly invisible mesh walls float silently through the water and catch anything that passes through, including fish, turtles, dolphins, birds, and seals. Once an animal is entangled, there’s little chance of escape. The net tightens with every movement, cutting deep into the flesh, restricting breathing, eating, and mobility. In seals, gill net causes brutal wounds as it saws through skin and tissue..
Because of this extreme cruelty and the risk to countless non-target species, gill net use is prohibited in Namibian waters. But despite the law, entanglement rates remain high. With almost no enforcement and very few inspectors monitoring the industry, illegal gill net use goes unchecked. The fishing industry, under pressure to maximise catches, often turns a blind eye, or knowingly violates the ban. The result is a trail of suffering across our coastline.
