How to flush and bleed the power steering fluid in a Toyota Corolla or similar. This features my 2004 Toyota Matrix (Corolla 4 door hatchback according to the title) getting its first power steering fluid change. This means bleeding out the old fluid and introducing fresh fluid.

There are so a variety of crazy ways of doing this that are uploaded like jacking the car up, turning the key and turning the steering wheel side to side for a certain amount of seconds, even starting the engine for a second only to have a volcano of fluid splatter all over the place.

Here is the intelligent, easy way do single handedly flush and bleed the power steering fluid without jacking up the front of the car and jumping inside to turn the wheel and hope the reservoir doesn't empty.

Mityvac MV8000
Clear PVC Tubing 5/16" ID x 7/16" OD
ATF
Wrench to clamp hose
Funnel
Plug to seal off inlet nipple, 1/16" to 5/8" Silicone Rubber Tapered Plug Assortment
124 Buna-N O-Ring, 70A Durometer, 1-1/4" ID, 1-7/16" OD, 3/32" Width for cap if necessary
Container for the used fluid
Paper towels


Place paper towels under the components to absorb any ATF that may drip out when disconnecting and reconnecting the return hose.

Remove the cap and replace the o-ring if needed.

Use the Mityvac to extract the used fluid residing in the reservoir.

Put the cap back on to prevent residual fluid from escaping when the return hose is disconnected.

Attach one of the included tapered adapters to the stock Mityvac tube and insert it clear PVC tubing with a 5/16ths inner diameter and a 7/16ths outer diameter.

Use a Vise Grip or similar to disengage the return hose clamp and pull the return hose off.

Seal the inlet nipple with a plug or even cellophane with rubber bands.

Insert the clear PVC tubing into the return hose and slide the clamp over the intersection.

Insert the funnel into the reservoir which should remain vertical without any assistance.

Add new ATF and fill to the cold max stamped on the reservoir.

Commence the fluid bleeding process by giving the mityvac a few squeezes which applies vacuum. Each time the Mityvac container is almost full, touch the release pressure lever and empty the old ATF into a jug of some kind to be recycled. Top off the reservoir with more new ATF ensuring the reservoir never runs dry. Running dry will introduce air pockets which requires bleeding the system again.

Repeat 4 or 5 times until ATF comes out transparent, and ATF in the reservoir is at max cold.

Install the cap, disconnect the Mityvac setup, remove the inlet plug, and reconnect the return hose and clamp. Add more ATF to get back to cold max.
