HISTORICAL MATCH | JAPAN vs BRAZIL | Men's VNL 2022. The 2022 Men's Qualifying Round for the Nations League (VNL) reached the sixth and final day of the third week on Sunday, July 10th, when Japan (ranked 7th in the FIVB rankings) faced Brazil (ranked 2nd) at Maruzen Intec Arena Osaka and lost 0-3. Japan finished the qualifying round in 5th place with 9 wins and 3 losses. The final round, which will be contested by the top 8 teams, will be held in Bologna (Italy) from Wednesday, July 20th.

Captain Ishikawa and Nishida, who had few opportunities to play in the previous day's match against Germany, scored points, but in the first set, Brazil put pressure on Japan with their powerful serves, and Japan started off somewhat under pressure. Although they managed to tie the score from a maximum of four points down, they unfortunately lost the set.

In the second set, Onodera's quick play and opponent's mistakes gave them a two-point lead in the early stages. However, Brazil's fast turnaround from a solid defense led to consecutive losses of points, allowing them to turn the game around to 10-13. After that, Otsuka, who came in as a substitute, played well and brought the game into a close contest, but at 23-24, Onodera scored a service ace into the net, and they lost this set as well.

In the third set, they started to make mistakes from 10-12 and struggled in the middle. Captain Ishikawa played a key role, but they couldn't get the momentum going. They brought in Takanashi and Oya to try and fight back, but it wasn't enough and they lost in straight sets.
