This webinar will provide an in-depth exploration of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) strategies for patients with PSP, CBD and MSA. The course will cover a range of AAC methods, from low-tech solutions like communication boards and letter/word boards to high-tech devices with speech-generating capabilities.

We will examine the different types of AAC and discuss how each can be customized to meet the specific needs of the patient, taking into account their cognitive and motor impairments. Special attention will be given to access accommodations, such as eye-tracking technology, switch controls, and head pointers, ensuring that patients with severe mobility limitations can still engage in communication.

The webinar will highlight the features of high-tech AAC systems that offer valuable support for individuals, including customizable vocabulary, message banking, and advanced speech output options, all designed to enhance communication effectiveness and independence.

Additionally, we will provide an overview of referral pathways for Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs), guiding healthcare providers on how to initiate AAC assessments and referrals for patients with PSP to ensure timely and appropriate intervention.

By the end of this session, participants will be equipped with practical knowledge of AAC options and strategies tailored to the unique needs of PSP patients, fostering improved quality of life through enhanced communication abilities.

About the Speaker:
Michelle G. Ganann, MS CCC-SLP, is a speech-language pathologist who specializes in Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), swallowing disorders, and cognitive communication disorders. She is the lead Clinical Specialist in Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) for Mass General Brigham Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital and Boston Medical Center. She utilizes the latest technological advancements to help patients with a variety of communication needs maintain or improve their independence with daily activities and interactions with others.

Michelle finds great satisfaction in her ability to connect with her patients on a personal level. She takes pleasure in identifying each patient's unique needs and priorities and developing a customized treatment plan that yields significant results.
