Kilmarnock Railway Station was transformed into a magical ‘Gare Magique’ this week, as East Ayrshire pupils took part in a festive French school trip with a difference.



“Christmas at the Magic Station” was designed as an opportunity for pupils to use French in real conversations and what better way to celebrate the festive fun than with a special French Christmas grotto?



The pupils were asked to design a “passport” in French and they will bring it along to the station as their ticket to the Gallic Grotto.



Presenting their passport to the control office, the pupils had to state their name and age in French, before being led by the Elves to the ‘Magic Gate’ where they got to rub noses with Rudolph!



The pupils helped to advise Rudolph on the best food to eat for his Christmas journey and how to get fit for the trip. Overseeing the meeting from the glitzy gift shop was a jolly festive Mrs Claus.



At the café, pupils had to buy a drink and something to eat, speaking French and using ‘special Euro money vouchers’.



There was then a chance to sit in Santa’s house in front of the fire, where stockings got hung and French carols were sung, before a traditional French quiz was held.



The special event was organised by East Ayrshire Council’s 1+2 Languages Development Team, the Kilmarnock Heritage Trust and Community Village.

Also taking part were the Balmoral Road Day Centre, U-Can, Action for Children and the Movan Centre.

It was a huge hit with pupils, especially when they saw some travellers double check their tickets, making sure they’d arrived in Kilmarnock and not Paris!
