Описание к видео Why Sardinia DNA Is So Unique

Sardinia is one of the most beautiful islands in the Mediterranean, but what is its genetic history and how has this shaped the DNA of Sardinian people today? Its status as an island has created a unique pattern of genetic isolation and mixing over thousands of years.
The island is the second largest in the Mediterranean after Sicily and sits just south of Corsica. Sardinia has a population of just over 1.6 million and, despite being part of Italy, enjoys a degree of autonomy as the Autonomous Region of Sardinia. It is also one of the world’s “blue zones,” with many residents living to over 100 years old.
Throughout history, Sardinia was settled and influenced by multiple civilizations, including Phoenicians from the Levant, Carthaginians from North Africa, and later Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Genoese, Pisans, Catalans, Aragonese, and the Duchy of Savoy.
Genetically, Sardinians are unique in Europe. While most of Europe experienced waves of hunter-gatherers, early farmers, and Steppe migrations, Sardinia remained relatively isolated, preserving a high proportion of ancestry from early European farmers. Later genetic admixture occurred through Phoenician, Carthaginian, and Roman influence, adding layers of northern and eastern Mediterranean ancestry, as well as a small North African component.
Today, modern Sardinians carry a strong signal of early European farmer ancestry, with common Y-DNA haplogroups including I2 (especially I2a1a-M26), R1b-M269, and G2a, while maternal haplogroups are dominated by H1 and H3. This remarkable genetic continuity, combined with cultural and geographic isolation, makes Sardinia a living window into ancient European history.
