Small tea farmers in Borsola, located in Assam’s Sonitpur district, are facing a major crisis after a sudden crash in tea leaf prices. Farmers say they are now receiving as low as ₹16 per kg—well below their cultivation costs—and are urging the Assam government to fix a Minimum Support Price (MSP) of ₹25 per kg to protect their livelihoods.

The growers sell their produce to Bought Leaf Factories (BLFs), which do not grow their own tea but procure fresh leaves from small farmers. Many allege that BLFs are exploiting them and that the Tea Board of India is absent when it comes to their concerns. Tea farming is the main source of income in the region, and farmers warn that without immediate support, their survival is at stake.
