#4K #WalkingTour #Korea
I recorded this short walk on the spur of the moment. The Starbucks at Yaksu Station (Seoul Subway Lines 3 and 6) was out of my usual coffee, so I walked over to the Starbucks at Dongguk University Station (Line 3). It was a lovely day with fantastic weather. I happened to have my gimble with me, so I decided to walk back the same way and turn on the camera.
It's unlikely I would have filmed this stretch of Dongho-ro, otherwise. Parts of it have appeared in some of my videos before, including the first one I published (see the See Also section below). I have plans for future walks that terminate at Dongguk University Station, but none involving this bit of road.
We start at Dongguk University Station in the first of two neighborhoods on this walk: Jangchung Dong. This neighborhood encompasses Dongguk University, some hotels, several office buildings, the National Theater, and an arena. A significant portion of it is taken up by a corner Namsan Mountain Park and the old Seoul City Wall. We exit via Gate 4 onto Dongho-ro (01:07) and look around.
Jangchung Arena is across the street (01:19). Today, it's the home of two professional volleyball teams, but the structure that was originally on the site was used for military training. In 1961, a Korean engineer was hired to design a new, multi-purpose facility. A Phillippine engineering firm was brought in to build it, and Jangchung Gymnasium opened in 1963. It underwent a 2 1/2-year renovation beginning in 2012, then reopened as Jangchung Arena in 2015.
To the southwest, on a hill at the base of Namsan, stands Dongguk University, with N Seoul Tower rising in the background (01:31). The university was started life as Myeongjin School, founded in 1906 by members of the Association of Buddhism Research. It underwent several transformations before finally gaining its current status as a university in 1953. It maintains its Buddhist affiliation to this day.
Seoul Tower is a popular tourist destination and an ever-present landmark around central Seoul. It appears in many of the videos on this channel, and it was also the destination of one of the walks (see below).
As we head southeast along Dongho-ro, we find banners hanging from light poles promoting members of one of the pro volleyball teams that call Jangchung Arena home. At 02:50 we see the Sillay Duty Free shop and then the Silla Hotel (03:01), both owned by the Samsung group. The staircase in front of the Duty Free shop leads to a trail that follows the old Seoul City Wall, part of the Namsan Mountain Trail portion of the city wall trails. This has also appeared in a couple of my videos.
The road that runs beside the city wall, visible across the street from 03:42, marks the boundary of Jangchung-dong and Dasan-dong. Where the former could be called a mixed commercial/residential/recreational neighborhood, Dasan-dong is massively residential, with a wide range of property values. The commercial buildings at the start of the walk are relatively new, but as we near Yaksu Station they're older. We'd find something similar were we to dive into the backstreets: the residences in Jangchung-dong tend to be newer, but those in Dasan-dong are of varying age, some several decades old, with the newer ones concentrated in particular areas throughout.
At 09:17, we enter Yaksu Station Gate 1 and bring this walk to an end.

I filmed this in the late afternoon of October 29, 2022, with an iPhone 11 on a DJI OM 5 in 4K @ 60 fps. The temperature was around 19°C/66°F. I edited and rendered with DaVinci Resolve Studio 18.
