In 1944, Clive Acker and Ed Kocher founded Jump Records with the idea of producing Classic Jazz recordings on the West Coast similar in nature to those that had been produced successfully in New York by Milt Gabler on his renowned Commodore Records label. Jump’s first session in Hollywood during July 1944 featured composer / pianist Charles LaVere and His Chicago Loopers and was moderately successful so Clive and Ed were off and running. Their collective efforts continued up through 1955. Presented herein is an unissued performance from Jump’s second recording session of 1 November 1944 again with LaVere’s Chicago Loopers with modified personnel. In order to ensure significant sales, the corporate gentlemen made the expensive decision to hire some of the best musicians in Hollywood and that task was delegated to Charlie LaVere to assemble a top notch group. Besides LaVere on piano the highly credentialed personnel consists of trumpeter Billy May, clarinetist Matty Matlock, trombonist Joe Yukl, guitarist George Van Eps, string bassist Artie Shapiro and Nick Fatool at the drums. This unissued version of “If I Had You” is the first of 3 takes that were done that day. All 3 seem worthy of issue to me but this one never made the cut. Note: there is a brief defect in my source at the 1:47 mark but it is minor. Enjoy!
