Darband – the peaceful gem of north Tehran
Once a small village near Tajrish and Shemiran, Darband has now become one of Tehran’s most scenic neighborhoods. It’s the starting point of a famous hiking route leading up to Mount Tochal, which proudly overlooks the city. For those who prefer to skip the hike, a chairlift offers an easy ride with stunning views.

The name Darband in Persian literally means “the gateway of the mountain,” with “band” referring to a mountain or pass.

This area also holds great cultural importance — many legendary Iranian poets and musicians, including Iraj Mirza, Mohammad-Taqi Bahar, Forough Farrokhzad, Abolhasan Saba, Ruhollah Khaleghi, Rahi Moayeri, and Darvish Khan, rest in peace here at the historic Zahir od-Dowleh Cemetery.

Darband enjoys a refreshing climate throughout the year and often turns into a snowy wonderland in winter.

At the beginning of the trail, about 250 meters long, visitors can find cozy cafes and small restaurants lined along the path. In the evenings, these spots come alive as both locals and tourists relax, share hookah, and enjoy the charming traditional vibe known as qahvehkhane sonnati.
