High up in the Indian Himalayas, at an altitude of approximately 5,029 meters (16,500 feet), lies Roopkund Lake, famously known as the "Skeleton Lake." This glacial lake, located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, India, has baffled historians, scientists, and travelers for decades due to the hundreds of ancient human skeletons discovered in and around its icy waters.

Discovery and Initial Theories
Roopkund Lake came into prominence in 1942 when a British forest ranger stumbled upon the eerie sight of human remains scattered around the lake. Initial speculation ranged from ritual suicides to the remains of a lost Japanese military expedition. However, subsequent research revealed these skeletons dated back to around 850 CE, debunking these theories.

Scientific Investigations
Modern techniques such as radiocarbon dating and DNA analysis have provided fascinating insights. The remains belong to two distinct genetic groups: one South Asian and the other with Mediterranean ancestry. Local folklore tells the story of King Jasdhaval of Kannauj, who embarked on a pilgrimage to Nanda Devi with his pregnant queen, Rani Balampa, and a large entourage. Their disregard for sacred rituals angered the goddess Nanda Devi, who sent a devastating hailstorm as divine retribution, killing the entire group.
