I am a former statewide K-5 intervention and 6-12 remedial education program specialist. I current oversee a reading clinic for students in grade 3. I am concerned about the lack of information provided for teachers and parents related to literacy resources. Additionally, the ban on information related to reading in various states is more than an infringement on academic freedom. I believe these new policies are creating an environment where children have less access to literacy and parents have fewer alternatives and little information. The most concerning part of this fiasco is that children do not appear to be performing academically and are actually reading less. I hope more scholars in the field of literacy begin to speak out regarding this concern and raise awareness about the elimination of vital research, practice, and resources in the field which can help children.
