The Story of Iman Vellani | Life Before Fame

Right now, Iman Vellani is living the dream. With the premiere of her new series “Ms. Marvel” on Disney+, this 19-year-old Pakistani-Canadian actress has joined the ranks of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, something she once believed to be inconceivable as a young girl shopping for back-issues of the titular hero at her local Markham, Ontario comic shop. And not only does this moment mark Iman’s onscreen debut, but it also marks the MCU’s very-first on-screen Muslim superhero. For those who don’t know, Ms. Marvel -- aka, Kamala Khan is a high-school student dealing with typical teenage problems like angst and growing pains. But in the comics, the phrase “growing pains” is taken to some very literal levels with Kamala’s ability to shape-shift her appearance and increase her body size to some pretty extreme heights. In the television series, however, those powers have been altered somewhat, but Iman remains happy that an individual of South Asian descent is finally being represented to North American audiences as a hero.
