Five months ago, we uncovered the initial signs of vandalism, with individuals cutting down ancient cedar trees, allowing them to fall recklessly on graves, and dragging them across the cemetery, carelessly knocking over fieldstone headstones in the process. In response, we installed cameras and began a vigilant monitoring effort to protect the cemetery. Despite a quiet period of five months, our worst fears were realized when the vandals returned, this time felling a historic oak tree and leaving behind a disheartening mess.

The Mahone-Ingram Cemetery is more than just a burial ground; it began as the final resting place for the enslaved individuals of the Mahone family, with their descendants continuing to use it for burials long after.
