Swiss/France Trip 2023 @ Bern, Switzerland (20230622), Episode 1

Bern is the capital of Switzerland and of Bern canton. It is located in the west-central part of the country and lies along a narrow loop of the Aare River. The city was founded in 1191 as a military post by Berthold V, Duke of Zähringen. Bern is known for its well-preserved medieval architecture and its UNESCO World Heritage Site Old Town. The city has a population of about 133,000 people as of 2022.

The Gurten Trail is a hiking trail in Bern that stands 316 meters above Bern with its highest point, the Ostsignal, some 858 meters above sea level. The hiking trails are signposted by the Berner Wanderwege association. The Gurten is a mountain situated just to the south of Bern and is Bern’s local mountain. It is 858 metres high, and the summit yields views of Bern, of the Jura mountains and of the Alps. Starting at the valley station of the Gurten funicular, which can be reached in about 15 minutes from Bern’s main station with tram no. 9, several trails lead through the forest to the top of the Gurten. The Gurten (Güsche) Trail Running is also a great spot for trail running suiting all abilities, with terrain ranging from mountain meadows with fantastic views to more wooded trails.

The Old City is the medieval city center of Bern and has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1983. It was built on a narrow hill bordered on three sides by the river Aare and its compact layout has remained essentially unchanged since its construction during the twelfth to the fifteenth century. The Old City is surrounded by the Aare River on three sides, which protected it from invasion during the Middle Ages. The Old City of Bern is known for its impressive sandstone buildings and incomparable charm. Also typical for the city are its quaint alleys and the six kilometers of arcades.

The Zytglogge is a landmark medieval tower in Bern and is one of the most famous Old Town sights. It was built in the early 13th century and has served the city as a guard tower, prison, clock tower, center of urban life and civic memorial. The tower is ornate and has revolving figures that twirl at four minutes before the hour, after which the chimes begin. The tower began telling time for the inhabitants of Bern and as the official timekeeper, its location could not be more central.

The Münster of Bern is a Swiss Reformed cathedral in Bern. It is located on the south side of the Aare peninsula. The cathedral was built in the Gothic style between 1421 and 1893. The Münster of Bern is the tallest cathedral in Switzerland and is a major tourist attraction.

The Aare River is a river in Switzerland that flows through Bern and is channelled into Lake Biel. It originates from the Oberaar glacier in the eastern Bernese Alps and is the longest wholly Swiss river. The river rises in the Aare Glacier of the Bernese Alps in Bern canton, below the Finsteraarhorn and west of the Grimsel Pass. The river cuts through the scenic Aare Gorge as it flows north past Meiringen. The River Aare between Uttigen and Bern is extremely popular for all kinds of boat trips, offering an alternative route into the Swiss capital.

The Rose Garden (Rosengarten) is one of the most beautiful parks in Bern and offers an unrivaled view over the rooftops of the historic Old Town, the Münster (Minster) and the loop in the Aare river. The Rose Gardens are set in the eastern part of Swiss capital, at an elevated position above the Aare river. The gardens itself are very ordinary, even not worth coming only for them. Contrary to that, the Bern city views from here are the best you can have in the area. The entire city lies just beneath you at Aare river sharp bend. Whether you feel like coffee and cake, a hearty brunch or an attractively priced set menu, Restaurant Rosengarten serves up fine food all day in a stylish ambiance. The restaurant is located at the southern entrance to the park, just a short walk from the Bern Animal Park, BearPark and in sight of the children’s play area.
