Roopkund Lake is a high-altitude glacial lake in the Himalayas of the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, India, famous for the hundreds of ancient human skeletons found along its edges. This natural wonder is also known as "Mystery Lake" or "Skeleton Lake".

Location: In the lap of the Trishul massif, Chamoli district, Uttarakhand.
Altitude: Approximately 5,029 meters (16,499 feet) above sea level.
Mystery of Skeletons: When the snow melts, human and equine skeletal remains, some with preserved flesh, become visible. Scientific studies suggest the remains belong to genetically diverse groups who died in separate events, some dating to around 800 CE and others to 1800 CE, possibly due to a severe hailstorm.
Trek Difficulty: The trek is generally considered moderate to difficult and is recommended for experienced trekkers due to the high altitude and rugged terrain.
Highlights: The trek features dense oak and rhododendron forests, vast high-altitude alpine meadows (Ali and Bedni Bugyal), and breathtaking views of peaks like Trishul and Nanda Ghunti.

How to Reach
Base Camp: The trek generally starts from Lohajung, which is a motorable village.
By Air: The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport (DED) in Dehradun, approximately 195 km from the base camp area.
By Train: The nearest major railway station is Kathgodam (KGM), from where one can take a taxi or bus to Lohajung.
By Road: Lohajung is well-connected by motorable roads. The route from Kathgodam passes via Almora, Kausani, and Gwaldam.
The final journey to the lake is a multi-day trek. Trekking organizers like Trek The Himalayas and Himalaya Shelter offer guided tours and can provide up-to-date information on the trek and necessary permits.
