As I journeyed through the spiritual realms in a synchronized ceremonial quest alongside my student to bring her remaining guides home to her final alter, my connection to the spiritual world was abruptly severed.

Two children, who were playfully chasing each other had raced through the room, completely unaware of any danger. One of them crossed in front of my student and nearly fully in front of me as we tranced.

A slew of chaos erupted throughout the room, but determined to finish the ceremony, I resumed to resettle, refocus, and reconnect.

I slowly began to drift back into vibration, but the energy drifted away from me. It was too late. The connection was lost.

Reopening my pathway to the spiritual realm became a communal task at this point. Money was burned to make amends and express apologies. The child and his mother apologized to the spirits. I called my Xifu, who consoled me and called my guides back. My student’s grandmother, another shaman in attendance, also assisted.

When I started again, I could feel the strength of the energy return. I restarted everything as if I was re-entering the home again. We concluded the ritual successfully, but following this incident, my energy continued to feel off, and I underwent a period of recovery. I had to raise my guides again and hu plig for them to come back home, using a male and female chicken given to me by the family of my student.

Incidents like these are things we only hear about in stories. Our capacity to effect change is heavily reliant on the working connections we build with the spirits.

Moving forward, I would encourage anyone performing such ceremonies to safeguard both sides of the session, especially if children are present.
