God of War (2018) is an action-adventure game developed by Santa Monica Studio and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. Released for PlayStation 4 in April 2018 and later for Windows in January 2022, it marks a major reinvention of the God of War franchise, shifting from its Greek mythology roots to Norse mythology. Set in the realm of Midgard, the story follows Kratos, the former Greek God of War, and his young son Atreus as they journey to fulfill the final wish of Kratos’s late wife—scattering her ashes atop the highest peak in the nine realms. Along the way, Kratos conceals his godly past while teaching Atreus how to survive, as they face mythological creatures and gods of the Norse world.

This installment introduces several gameplay changes, including a third-person, over-the-shoulder camera and a single continuous shot presentation with no camera cuts or loading screens. Unlike previous entries, it is single-player only, discarding features like free jumping, swimming, and Kratos’s traditional chained blades in favor of a magical battle axe. Atreus also assists in combat and puzzle-solving, adding a layer of strategy to encounters. The game includes light RPG elements such as skill trees, gear upgrades, and optional boss fights, including Valkyries and dragon encounters. The world is semi-open, offering interconnected areas accessed by foot or boat, with fast travel unlocked later.

Critically acclaimed for its storytelling, world design, combat, music, and the emotional depth of its characters—especially the father-son dynamic—God of War was hailed as a triumphant reboot that preserved the heart of the series while evolving it. It won numerous Game of the Year awards and sold over 23 million copies by 2022, making it the best-selling game in the franchise. A novelization and comic prequel were later released, and a live-action television adaptation is in development for Amazon Prime Video. The game’s success led to a direct sequel, God of War Ragnarök, released in 2022 for PlayStation consoles and in 2024 for Windows.
