Satyr tragopan (Tragopan satyra) couple, male bird performing a “lateral” display.

Also known as the “Crimson horned pheasant” these beautiful pheasants are found from India through to Myanmar.

This captive pair is just 2 years old, their first year as full adult birds. Whilst the tragopan display of inflated horns and fleshy lappet is typical of the species, the “lateral” display where the male inflates his feathers and pancakes out, facing broadside to the female is much more commonly commonly observed. Here the male bird shows the female all of his beautiful plumage in a much more relaxed way than the sometimes-energetic chase that follows the true lappet and horns display!
