Описание к видео Your child’s cranky mood after-school isn’t random—this shift changes everything

Other ways to reduce the chances that setting events will lead to challenging behavior:

1. Avoid making requests right away (and yes, even questions count as demands). Let them decompress before asking them to do chores, homework, or forcing small talk. The less “on” they have to be, the more regulated they can become.

2. Skip the rapid-fire questions: Instead of “How was your day? Did you eat lunch? What did you learn?” Try offering connection with no pressure to respond.

Say something like:

👉 “I’m so happy to see you.”
👉 “I was thinking about you today.”

3. 🧼 Washing hands or changing clothes: These are common after-school routines, but they still count as demands.

Instead, pair them with something motivating:

👉 “Wash hands, then we’ll grab a snack.”
👉 “I’ll get your cozy clothes—then we can hang and have a snack.”

4. Screen time: Every family handles screens differently, and that’s okay. But here’s one thing to watch out for: using screen time as the main decompression tool.

Yes, screens offer instant relief—but they don’t teach kids how to handle overstimulation, boredom, or transition stress. So the problem doesn’t go away… it just gets delayed.

Then what happens?

Turning it off becomes the trigger, because you’re removing the only coping strategy they’ve come to rely on.

5. Teach them to label how they feel so they can advocate for what they need

After school, your child might feel overwhelmed, overstimulated, tired, or just “done”—but if they don’t have the language for it, that discomfort often comes out as whining, yelling, or refusing to cooperate.

Instead of managing the behavior, teach them how to recognize and name what’s going on inside, so they can ask for what helps.

➡️ When we stop looking at behavior as something to manage and start focusing on building skills, that’s when real change happens. Comment READY and I’ll show you how.
