A Michigan man died from a kidney transplant due to a believed rabies virus infection in 2024.

This was the fourth transplant-transmitted rabies event in the United States since 1978.

The donor was an Idaho resident who was injured by a skunk while defending a kitten. Two days after showing rabies symptoms, he was declared brain dead and his organs were recovered for transplantation.

The Michigan kidney recipient began experiencing symptoms 5 weeks after the transplant and died 7 days later. Rabies virus from a silver-haired bat was detected in his samples.

4 corneal grafts from the donor were also recovered, 3 of which were transplanted before the rabies investigation. The cornea recipients underwent precautionary graft removal and PEP, and remained asymptomatic.

The heart and lungs from the donor were used for medical research and could not be tested.
