A chord of C major has three notes, C E and G. these can be arranged in any order on a keyboard, and the bass note in the left hand would be C. It’s simple enough but it doesn’t sound particularly inspiring. What about if you added a note or two to the chord?

Well you can do this, by adding other notes that appear in the scale of C major, whose notes are C D E F G A B C.

Not the F though….that’s only a half step above the note that defines the “major” bit of the chord, but you can put a D, A and sometimes a B in. Why not the B all the time? Well, it’s close to the root, and if the top line, which is the most important part in a band setting, has a C, and there’s a B below it, then you’ll run into problems…
