In business, signal is the meaningful information or actions that truly drive outcomes. Noise is everything else — distractions, irrelevant data, misleading chatter, and activity that feels urgent but doesn’t actually matter.

🎯 What Is “Signal”? Signal refers to clear, relevant, actionable insights. Examples include:
Information tied directly to strategic goals or key performance metrics.
Trends that reflect real shifts in customer needs or market structure.
Patterns that repeat over time and point toward meaningful change.
High‑impact decisions or tasks that move a business outcome forward.

For example, in strategic planning, signal is “the clear, relevant information that directly informs decisions” rather than the overwhelming mass of data available to leaders.

📢 What Is “Noise”?
Noise is:
Irrelevant or low‑value data
One‑off events that look big but aren’t meaningful
Information that distracts from priorities
Activity that creates the illusion of progress
Emotional or sensational inputs that don’t change strategy

For instance, leaders are “inundated with information,” but much of it is “distracting, overwhelming, and often misleading” rather than helpful.
