Описание к видео Layla AbdelRahim: A Radical Critique of Modern Education (Conversation & Workshop)

In her new book, "Wild Children - Domesticated Dreams: Civilization and the Birth of Education" (Fernwood, May 2013), Layla AbdelRahim examines and critiques the underlying premises of the overarching and interrelated systems that form the basis of what we call "civilization". She also examines how these (often unquestioned) premises structure both our socio-environmental and socio-economic relationships.

In this conversation, Layla will discuss how the human-animal origin stories justify coercive relationships of dominance, relationships that splinter our sense of community with our environment. Premises of dominance and predation are inherent to both the theistic and the scientific narratives of civilization and demand that children be trained to accept them as either natural evolutionary choices for subsistence and survival or as divine decree. Yet, children continue to be born with a wild longing for life and diversity and have to therefore to be subjected to decades long domesticating practices, called education and schooling, in order to renounce their animality and to accept the narrative of the human predation machine. In this sense, what and how we "consume" is intimately intertwined with our origin stories, with our dependence on technology, and with the domestication of sexuality. The aforementioned is almost entirely contingent upon predatory socio-economic relationships that manifest themselves as a culture of rape, thoughtless carnivorism, exploitation of human and nonhuman "resources", and forced, obligatory schooling.
